Visiting a Retirement Home

Young people may be a little hesitant to go to retirement homes—and that is understandable because they would rather spend their day out with friends or doing something else. A retirement home is a place for old people, and most kids would not want to go there.

However, the old people that live in retirement homes need the interaction with young people to add variety and fun to their daily routines. Visiting their elders in their new home away from home can also improve the youth’s relationship with the older generation.

There is also a lot to be learned by talking to older people. They are wiser and have more experiences in life that young people can glean important lessons from.

When to visit

Knowing the perfect time when to visit the elderly in retirement homes is very important. There are places that do not have a curfew for visitors, but one should make sure that treatment or rest time is not disturbed. Also, it is a good idea to visit when the resident is active to make most of the time. Aside from special occasions, setting a regular visiting schedule is important as to give the resident something to look forward to every week or month.

Things to remember

It is important for a young person to keep promises—especially those made to a retirement home resident. The elderly who are in retirement homes feel “abandoned” by their family and promising to visit yet not pushing through is very cruel. If not sure on the date of the next visit, one should say that the resident would be visited as soon as the schedule permits.

It is also important to listen to the elderly sincerely. If the resident is complaining, one should try to placate and assure her that something will be done to address the complaint.
