There are a lot of schools that require their students to perform community service by providing seniors in their area some assistance in daily tasks and chores. Though the students are not qualified to perform the work of skilled and licensed workers, they are a great help for the elderly who are finding it hard to perform common chores.
Usually offered in the summer to give the students a more meaningful way to spend their summer or maybe earn some pocket money, these programs are a good way to enhance the intergenerational relationships in a community. Seniors and students often occupy different social places and situations even in a small community, and promoting an intergenerational program that will benefit both parties has been done by various organizations throughout the years—and usually yields positive results.
Tasks that students can perform for the seniors
There are a wide variety of tasks and chores that students can perform to help the senior members of their community. Seniors will have a difficult time spending time to tend to their garden and yard, and even without training students can help out in this department easily. They can mow the lawn, remove the weeds, and water the plants under the supervision of the senior. Washing cars and other vehicles may also pose a challenge to a senior, and a student or two will get this done in no time.
Inside the house there are also a lot of things that students can help seniors with. For example, changing light bulbs and checking the batteries of smoke alarms, as well as taking out the trash. They can also set up phones and other electronic items, or even take care of pets. Shopping will also be a breeze if seniors have students to assist them in the store.
